Join the Celebration at the 35th Annual Nisqually Watershed Festival!

As the crisp air of autumn begins to replace the warmth of summer, there’s no better way to embrace the changing season than by attending the 35th Annual Nisqually Watershed Festival. This beloved community event is set to take place on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. The festival is a celebration of nature, culture, and the vibrant community that makes the Nisqually Watershed so special.

From 10 AM to 4 PM, the refuge will be buzzing with excitement as families, nature enthusiasts, and curious minds of all ages come together to explore the wonders of the Nisqually Watershed. The festival promises a day filled with art, discovery, music, and science, making it a perfect outing for everyone in the family.

A Day of Fun and Learning
The Nisqually Watershed Festival is more than just a celebration; it’s an opportunity to learn about the rich natural and cultural heritage of the region. Visitors can enjoy live performances, including the lively sounds of the Olympia Highlanders, and immerse themselves in storytelling sessions that bring to life the traditions and stories of the Nisqually people.

One of the festival’s highlights is the “Insect Extravaganza,” where kids and adults alike can get up close and personal with giant bugs, hold geckos, and learn about the fascinating world of insects that call the watershed home. The festival’s theme, “Insects of the Watershed,” is also showcased in the imaginative artwork of local students, which will be on display for all to enjoy.

Salmon, Science, and Hands-On Activities
No Nisqually Watershed Festival would be complete without a strong focus on the salmon that are so integral to the region. Attendees can watch a salmon dissection, learn about the salmon lifecycle, and even make their own salmon lifecycle keychain to take home. For those who enjoy hands-on activities, bring a t-shirt and create a one-of-a-kind fish print to remember the day.

This year’s festival also features interactive displays from local organizations, offering a chance to learn about killer whales, invasive species, and the importance of conservation in the Nisqually Watershed. And if you’re feeling hungry, you won’t want to miss the delicious salmon barbecue, along with other fair food options that are sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Practical Information
The festival is free to attend, making it an accessible and affordable way to spend a Saturday with family and friends. However, please note that food vendors are cash-only, and there is no ATM on site, so be sure to bring some cash with you. Parking is available at the Hawks Prairie Park-n-Ride (2548 Hogum Bay Rd NE, Olympia, WA 98516), with a shuttle running every 15 minutes to the refuge.

Embrace the Spirit of Nisqually
As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange and the salmon return to the rivers to spawn, the Nisqually Watershed Festival offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and celebrate the beauty of the season. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, this festival is a wonderful way to experience the magic of the Nisqually Watershed and the community that cherishes it.

Mark your calendars for September 28th, 2024, and get ready for a day of fun, learning, and celebration at the 35th Annual Nisqually Watershed Festival. We can’t wait to see you there!
